Study Mentor - Software Engineering / Cybersecurity
Masterschool
About us
Masterschool is an applied education research lab on a mission to unlock human potential. We’re a group of educators, researchers, and engineers building software and models at the edge of what’s possible - with the goal of improving the lives of billions.
At MSIT – Master School Institute of Technology, a global network of schools led by industry leaders, we offer immersive online programs that equip students with the skills, mentorship, and industry connections necessary to succeed in tech careers.
The opportunity
We’re expanding our synchronous learning model: every student in our programs now has access to a dedicated Study Mentor via a live Zoom room throughout the day. This isn’t about delivering lectures — it’s about being a knowledgeable, approachable presence who helps students when they’re stuck, answers questions, and keeps the learning momentum going. Each day starts with a short stand-up, after which you’re available in the Zoom room for your shift. Students work through their curriculum independently and come to you when they need guidance. Think of it as “office hours” rather than “classroom teaching.”
We’re hiring mentors for each of our two schools: Software Engineering and Cybersecurity. You’ll focus on one domain.
What your work looks like
- Be present and available in the cohort’s Zoom room during your shift (morning or afternoon)
- Run a short daily stand-up at the beginning of each shift to check in with students
- Answer technical questions, explain concepts, and help students debug problems
- Guide students through blockers without handing them the solution — help them learn to think independently
- Escalate recurring issues or curriculum gaps to the School Lead
- When there’s no immediate student support needed, contribute to content development and help us improve the curriculum overall
- Optionally: support students with soft skills like structuring their learning day or preparing for assessments
Key topics by school
You don’t need to be an expert in every topic, but you should have a solid working knowledge of the entry-level curriculum in your school. Here’s what students work on in the first months:
Software engineering
- Python fundamentals (variables, control flow, functions, data structures, OOP, error handling)
- Web basics (HTML5, CSS, responsive design)
- Developer tools (CLI, IDE, Git, branching, pull requests, code review)
- REST APIs, JSON, HTTP methods
- SQL & relational databases (SELECT, JOINs, GROUP BY, database design)
- Agile workflows and collaboration
Cybersecurity
- IT fundamentals (hardware, software, troubleshooting, networking basics)
- Operating systems (Windows, Linux, command line)
- Networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, VPNs)
- Security concepts (CIA triad, threat landscape, encryption basics)
- User account management, workstation setup, IT infrastructure
- CompTIA Security+ level knowledge is a strong plus
What makes you a great fit
- You speak German and English fluently
- You have practical experience or strong foundational knowledge in one of our domains (Software or Cyber)
- You can explain complex concepts simply — patience and clarity matter more than depth of expertise
- You’re comfortable helping beginners who are career changers, not CS graduates
- You’re reliable and available for a consistent daily shift, Monday through Friday
- You communicate proactively — if something isn’t working, you flag it
- Previous experience in tutoring, mentoring, or teaching is a plus but not required
Why this could be interesting for you
- Meaningful work: You’re directly helping people change their careers. Students remember their mentors.
- Low-pressure format: You’re not preparing or delivering lectures. You’re supporting self-directed learners — it’s structured but relaxed.
- Flexible engagement: Morning or afternoon shift, 100% remote. Combine it with other projects or commitments.
- Growing organization: MSIT is scaling. Mentors who perform well can grow into instructor, curriculum, or school lead roles.
- Collaborative team: You’re not alone — you work alongside School Leads and other mentors who share knowledge and support each other.
