Location: Los Angeles, CA; Hybrid (4 days in-office per week)

The Role
We're seeking a Regulatory Compliance Counsel to drive legal strategy across the full lifecycle of Sunbit's consumer financial service, from licensing and servicing through collections and dispute resolution. This is a hybrid role based out of our Los Angeles office with four days in office (Monday through Thursday) and Fridays remote.
You'll own the regulatory framework that fuels product expansion, keeps the business compliant across jurisdictions, and stays ahead of the evolving federal and state regulatory landscape.
The ideal candidate is meticulous, disciplined, and execution-focused, combining legal acumen with operational rigor to drive timely, compliant outcomes in a dynamic regulatory environment.
Requirements
What You’ll Own
Licensing and regulatory affairs:
- Serve as the lead legal point of contact for regulatory inquiries, examinations, and investigations from state agencies, the CFPB, and State Attorneys General, owning the response strategy from intake through resolution.
- Drive Sunbit's nationwide licensing program to fuel product expansion, maintain compliance across jurisdictions, and orchestrate cross-functional responses to new and evolving licensing needs.
- Stay ahead of the evolving regulatory landscape by monitoring federal and state legislative developments and assessing impact on Sunbit's product and operations.
- Partner with Legal & Compliance, Operations, and Product to implement practical, risk-based guidance that enables innovation and growth.
Litigation:
- Own and manage the company's consumer litigation portfolio, including claims related to servicing practices, collections, credit reporting and furnishing disputes, and TCPA matters.
- Develop and execute litigation strategy, manage outside counsel relationships, and drive cost-effective resolution of matters.
- Proactively analyze disputes and litigation trends to identify systemic issues, partnering with compliance and operations teams to implement durable, preventative solutions.
Servicing and collections:
- Partner with the Customer team to review and refine consumer-facing communications and campaigns in order to align messaging with regulatory requirements and company values.
- Counsel on policies, procedures, scripts, and escalations to ensure alignment with FDCPA, Reg. F, TCPA, UDAAP, SCRA, FCRA, and applicable state laws.
- Lead complaint response strategy across CFPB, state regulators, and direct consumer channels, translating complaint trends into durable operational fixes that reduce future exposure.
Qualifications & Core Competencies
- 5+ years of experience advising in consumer financial services or in another highly regulated industry.
- A JD from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to the State Bar of California in good standing.
- Experience managing consumer financial services litigation, including FCRA, TCPA, and FDCPA claims.
- Familiarity with bank partnership or sponsor bank lending models and related regulatory guidance is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to distill complex legal issues into concise, actionable guidance for business partners.
- Proactive approach to identifying issues, developing solutions, and driving matters to resolution.
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build productive relationships with regulators, internal stakeholders, and opposing counsel.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work product.

How We Pay:
- We believe in paying fairly and equitably based on a number of factors including but not limited to previous experience, relevant work history, interview performance, geographical location, internal equity, and expected level of ownership.
- We are targeting $140,000 – 175,000 per year for this role.
- This role will also be granted company equity via stock options
